Tomislav Mijatović is the new coach of the men’s senior basketball team of Croatia, the Croatian Basketball Association officially confirmed on May 20, 2025, at the suggestion of sports director Krunoslav Simon. Mijatović replaces Josip Sesar in that position, under whose leadership Croatia failed to qualify for the European Championship for the first time in its history, resulting in a change on the bench of the national team.
Mijatović is an experienced Croatian expert with extensive international experience. He started his coaching career in 2001 as an assistant coach in Cibona, and from 2010 he was part of the coaching staff of Turkish Anadolu Efes, where he worked under numerous renowned coaches and took part in winning two Euroleague titles (2021 and 2022), three Turkish championship titles, and three Turkish Cups. In February 2024, he briefly served as the head coach of Efes, and at the beginning of 2025, he was reassigned to the position of assistant following the arrival of a new coach.
Throughout his career, Mijatović was also involved in the Croatian national team’s work as an assistant coach, and he is recognized for his expertise, professionalism, and exceptional international reputation. His appointment was hailed as a logical choice, given his experience and references. Mijatović himself pointed out that leading the national team is a great honor and responsibility, and that the key to success lies in togetherness and maximum dedication to every match.
Under his leadership, Croatia is expected to qualify for the World Cup this summer, where they will play against Denmark and Norway in Group D. Every game will be an opportunity for a new start and the return of Croatian basketball to the European and world scene.
