The volleyball scene got a dynamic and exciting new competition: the first junior MEVZA tournament. This tournament represents a real strategic step forward in the volleyball promotion, a new momentum for developing young volleyball players, creating opportunities for young talents, and strengthening international competition. With the participation of the best teams from the region, the tournament, already during the first edition, became an essential platform for the affirmation of future stars of this sport.
“Based on the strategic plan and program we set two years ago, when we took over MEVZA, one of the key goals was consolidating the financial situation and developing the competition at the highest possible level. It was in this direction that we planned the launch of the MEVZA Junior Club Championship to enable the best clubs from each country to meet each other, gain experience, and prepare for the upcoming national team events during the summer.” as many international matches as possible, and in the long term create the foundations for the Junior Champions League, which is undoubtedly necessary for both European and Croatian volleyball.
15 teams from several European countries, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, and Croatia, participated in this first international experience. The goal of this competition is not only to provide top-quality conditions for young athletes but also to further popularize volleyball in the region, increase the number of girls who choose this sport, and create a platform for discovering new talents.
We plan to include more than 30 teams next year, which will be a big step forward. I expect other Croatian clubs to participate because I think it is essential to raise the quality at the club and representative level to step towards the European and, later, the world level. I can already announce that the competition will take place in Zadar from February 11 to 15.” – says HOS president Frane Žanić and adds: “I want to praise all the participants and thank the Association Office, which has borne the great burden of organizing the competition, with the support of the MEVZA Office. This historic tournament, the first for the club and Central European volleyball, could become a fundamental project that other zonal associations should follow
The tournament’s first edition brought top-notch volleyball, and the trophy was ultimately taken away by the players of Zagreb’s Olimpik, who stood out with their great games and deservedly celebrated. The Croatian team Cro Team also achieved a notable fourth place, showing their fighting spirit and potential for the future.
OK Olimpik’s victory and CRO Team’s placement among the four best teams are particularly significant, considering that CRO Team was by far the youngest team in the tournament. Namely, the competition was intended for players born in 2006 while they were younger in 2009, representing as much as three years of difference and in this extremely high age category. This shows that Croatian women’s volleyball has a perspective and can cope with all the regional clubs and even be better from them – Frane Žanić, CVF President
