SUPERSPORT CROATIAN FOOTBALL CUP FINAL IN OSIJEK

The executive board of the Croatian Football Federation (CFF) made an important decision to change the format of the SuperSport Croatian Football Cup final. After two seasons of experimenting with a two-game final, HNS listened to the voices of the football public and returned to the traditional, more attractive model – the final will again be played in one game at a predetermined stadium.

Key changes and reasons for the decision

The Cup Final returns to the one-game format, which is the standard in most European countries. This change brings more uncertainty, excitement, and a real spectacle for the fans, and the smaller clubs once again get the chance to surprise against the favorites.

One match on neutral ground reduces the possibility of disorder and logistical problems, while simultaneously increasing the importance and viewership of the final itself.

With this decision, Croatia is returning to European football trends, as only a rare few countries have had Cup finals over two games.

The 2025/26 final at the Opus Arena in Osijek

The first host of the final, according to the new format, will be the Opus Arena in Osijek, one of Croatia’s most modern stadiums, which further raises the level of organization and experience for all participants and fans.

The final will be played in May 2026, and an actual football holiday in Slavonia is anticipated, accompanied by a rich program and large attendance.

Historical context and reactions

The last one-game final was played in 2023, after which HNS temporarily introduced a two-game format due to security reasons. However, that model was not approved by fans and clubs, so the Association decided to return to the old system.

The decision was met with approval because the final brings more excitement, suspense, and a real sports spectacle to one game, which is the goal of this kind of competition.

The return of the SuperSport Croatian Football Cup final to a single game and the selection of the Opus Arena in Osijek as the host mark a new beginning and an additional step forward in the organization of one of the most significant sports events in Croatia. It is expected that this move will further popularize the competition and attract an even greater number of spectators to the stands and in front of the small screens.
