The beautiful new hall in Sisak was the right setting for the Snježana Ušić Croatian Cup finale. A match between two great rivals, Zagreb and Kaštela, who have already met once this season, and where Mladost won in the Superliga in five sets. This time, Kaštela women rejoiced, absolutely deservedly winning the coveted trophy.
Although the girls from Kaštel opened the first set with an ace, the girls from Zagreb dominated the field early on and took the lead with several consecutive series of points, which they kept until the end, until a fairly convincing 25:20. The players of Ribola were constantly behind in the results. They struggled to establish the game, and in the end, they were “short” by those five points.
The second set was better opened by Mladost, which also had several successful 3-0 series in this period of the game. However, Ribola caught up and overtook them at 17:16, leading with a relatively calm 23:20, so that the women from Zagreb would create an uncertain ending with another 3-0 series to equalize at 23:23. But the last two points were earned by the women from Kaštela, who tied the match at 1-1 in sets.
Whether that, or something else, disrupted the game of Mladostašica so much is a big question, but in the third set, nothing was visible from their game. They made mistake after mistake…
Ribola took the lead from the start, up to 9:2. Mladost coach Darko Nojić called for both minutes of rest, after that he started making changes, but all without success. The girls from Kaštela kept going point after point; at one point, they even had +1 on the account (19:4), and that period of the game ended with their convincing 25:12, for 2-1 in sets.
The collective decline of Mladost’s game continued in the fourth set, but not to that extent. In that set, the Kaštel women lead again from the start; they play more aggressively, sensing that the Zagreb women are in big trouble. Block, service, attack- everything is on the side of Ribola, who leads in the middle of the set with a convincing 17:11. Mladost moved closer to a promising 16:19. Still, with several excellent blocks and routine attacks through Bošković, Ribola once again dominated the field. In the end, they ended the match with 25:19, after an hour and a half of clean play.
A deserved victory for Ribol Kaštela, which had 14 points with a block (Mladost 13), seven service aces (5), 41 points in the attack (Mladost 42), but also ‘only’ 19 errors against Mladost’s 33.
Ivana Nedeljković was the most effective in Ribola with 15 points, while Dajana Bošković and Dijana Karatović each added 14. For Mladost, Leonarda Grabić scored 15 and Mirta Freund 14 points, including 7 with blocks.
After the match, Ribola Kaštela coach Mario Teppert said:
We were aware of the quality of our opponents and ours; that’s how we prepared for this final. And regardless of the loss of the first set, we didn’t give up on our plan. Tactically, we served well and tried to reduce our mistakes, which was the key to victory in the end. The girls did their best, and I congratulate them on the well-deserved trophy.
Darko Nojić, coach of Mladost, could not find the words to describe the inexplicable drop in his team’s game in the last two sets:
We opened the match nervous, inexplicably, and that followed us the whole time. But even with so many mistakes, we convincingly won the first set. We also opened the second set with a handful of mistakes and got into trouble. That’s a fighting team like Ribola, and they knew how to use it. The third set is completely inexplicable to me, and the water goes against their mill from then on. Ultimately, I can only congratulate Ribola on the victory; they deserved that trophy, and everything would have been different and unfair.
