MASTER DUVNJAK LEAD KIEL TO A NEW TROPHY! A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE BEFORE 20,000 SPECTATORS IN COLOGNE
Kiel handball players won the German Cup after an impressive 28:23 victory over Melsungen in the final, which was played in front of 20,000 spectators at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. The captain of Kiel, Domagoj Duvnjak (36), showed again why he is considered one of the best handball players in the world, leading his team to another trophy.
Duvnjak excelled on the field, scoring five goals and playing a key role in defense and game organization. Kiel’s most efficient player was Johansson, with seven goals, while goalkeeper Andy Wolff recorded as many as 16 saves, thereby further strengthening his team’s victory. On the Melsungen side, Simić recorded 13 saves, while Jonsson and David Mandić scored five and two goals, respectively.
In the match for third place, Balingen defeated RN Löwen in a taut game, scoring 32:31.
Croatian national team member and new captain Ivan Martinović suffered an injury during the semi-final match between his RN Löwen and Kiel. Löwen had an advantage of 16:12 when Martinović had to leave the field due to pain, leaving his team without a key player. In the end, Kiel turned the score around and won after overtime with a score of 32:31.
Martinović shared his emotions after the game:
How do I feel? Angry and disappointed, but I don’t think the injury is terrible. I just felt bad that I couldn’t continue the game. I’m going for an MRI on Monday, so I’ll know more.
Despite the injury, Martinović managed to score five goals before he had to leave the game.
The semi-final clash between Kiel and RN Löwen was a true drama. The regular part ended with a score of 28:28. After overtime, Kiel won with 32:31. Domagoj Duvnjak was again a key player for Kiel, scoring six goals and demonstrating incredible combativeness and experience.
In the second semi-final, Melsungen outscored Balingen by 31:27, and David Mandić contributed one goal to the victory.
The German Cup final brought a superb handball show in which experienced players like Domagoj Duvnjak showed why they are among the best in the sport. Although Ivan Martinović’s injury is worrying news for the Croatian national team, his words inspire hope that the recovery will not take long. For Duvnjak, this is yet another trophy in his rich career that confirms his status as a handball legend!
