In the match of the 12th round of the Machineseeker EHF Champions League, the Zagreb handball players hosted the Norwegian Kolstad on Wednesday evening in the Zagreb Arena. In front of 13,250 fans, the Lions drew against Kolstad 25:25. It is worth noting the 11 saves of Ante Grbavac and the significant attacking role of Ihar Bialiauski, who finished the match with eight goals.

Before the start of the match, Zagreb sports director Damir Bičanić and a representative of the White Lions awarded commemorative awards to the members of the RK Zagreb who contributed to the Croatian handball team’s remarkable success in January and won silver medals at the World Championship.

Zagreb opened the match weaker, especially defensively. By the end of the first half, the guests reached Matej Mandić’s and Ante Grbavac’s net 16 times. The Swede in the ranks of the Norwegian champion, Simon Jepsson, scored six times, while Adrian Aalberg added three goals. Only Ihar Bialiauski was in the right attacking rhythm for Zagreb with four goals, while Zvonimir Srna said three.

Zagreb is much better in the sequel – a tighter defense gives the correct result after 10 minutes and the Zagreb team takes the lead at 18:17. Several great defenses by Ante Grbavac in that period, while Luka Klarica and Ihar Bialiauski led the attack. Grbavac is excellent in the second half, while Zagreb in the attack finds a way to the net much more easily guarded by Torbjorn Bergerud – who is also at a lower level than in the first 30 minutes. Davor Gavrić’s two consecutive goals lead Zagreb to +3 (22:19), only ten minutes before the end of the match. However, the Norwegians quickly returned to the game with a series of goals. We entered the last 5 minutes with 23:23. In the infarct ending, Kolstad fails to realize an attack for victory, after which the Zagreb team fails to organize an attack in the last five seconds and the match ends with a division of points (25:25).

The Lions will return to the field on Saturday, when Sesvećani will be their guests in the new round of Package 24 of the Premier League. The excitement in the Champions League continues next week when Zagreb visit Aalborg in Denmark.

We entered the game without energy, without the will that graced us all this time in the Champions League. Expectations were high, we needed this victory to open the door to the next stage of the competition. We weren’t right; that’s a fact, especially in the first part, considering that we showed that we knew and could do it in the second. We were disappointed at halftime but picked ourselves up in the second half. Ante scored great in the goal and gave us a chance to win this game. In the end, there are two unfortunate minutes, the details that decided Kolstad to win a point here today. Fortune was not on our side – Velimir Petković, RK Zagreb Head Coach

I am satisfied with my edition today, but it wouldn’t have been like that if the great Srna, Gojun, and others weren’t in front of me. Unfortunately, it ended the way it did, but we will give our absolute best in the games to come—against Aalborg in Denmark and against Kielce at home – Ante Grbavac, RK Zagreb Goalkepeer

I’m not really happy with the match, it ended in a draw. We should have won this game, in the 20th minute of the second half we were leading with three points, but then we missed our chances and thus let the victory go. I think we made a lot of mistakes in the first half, we missed five or six chances to score, and our opponents overpowered us there. The second half was a little better, that’s where we improved with our defense. In the end it ended in a draw, that’s all I can say, one point is there… Tomorrow we already have training, we will continue to train seriously and show ourselves in the best possible light – Ihar Bialiauski, RK Zagreb player
